The Diamon Deb Nail File is commonly used by professional manicurists to shape, smoothen nails and prevent them from splitting and peeling.11-May-2021
The more grit a nail file has, the more the nails will end up chipping and peeling. Emery boards also tend to leave rough, jagged edges that will tear the nail tips and cause them to split. Traditional nail files, or buffing files as shown below, can leave a more smooth finish compared to an emery board.23-Mar-2020
A file is the only thing you should use to shape your nails. If you cut them you run the risk of trimming off too much length and leaving little room for fine-tuning the shape. Always file your nails in one direction starting at the outer and working your way around.23-Aug-2016
Glass files are much more suitable, sealing the keratin layers together at the edge of the nails and minimizing chipping.
A 180 grit nail file should be fine for shaping the natural nail edge – if nails are very soft or damaged, a 240 grit file may be better.
The most recommended nail file for filing acrylic, gel, or other enhancements is the 100/180 grit file. It can file, shape, and take down the top layers for most products.
Whether you choose a crystal or emery board nail file, one rule remains the same: you should swap them out every few months.
Nail files are used for grinding down long or broken nails whereas nail buffers are best designed for polishing the surface of your nails and cuticles. Nail buffers are more commonly used over the flat front of the nail rather than to trim down the point.
While metal is a lot stronger and more durable than sand granules, the metal used to make the files is usually of a lower grade and actually quite soft as far as metals go. Metal files also grind the nail and leave the nail tip “open” as opposed to “closed”.
Not only are glass nail files a generally more sustainable option since they can last for years, they're actually better for your nails too thanks to their super-fine grit.
