For beginners, stay within the 32-34 range.
For advanced paddlers, you can drop to the 30 -32-inch range.
The most popular SUP boards for general use are 10-11 feet in length and between 32 and 34 inches wide. If stability is a high priority for you, you'll want to look for a board that is 33-34 inches wide. You can go wider, but you may end up with a board that is sluggish and less fun to paddle.
As a general rule, the perfect paddle board size for persons with a height between 5' and 6' is 10' -11' long and 30†– 34†wide. Taller paddlers should aim for a board with the same width but a length of 12' – 14', while paddle boarders with a height under 5' need SUPs with 8' -10'.
Inflatable SUP's are typically either 4 inches thick or 6 inches thick. The 6†thick boards are extremely stable and provide excellent rigidity. They are great for beginners as well as people over 160 lbs. because they support the weight with no flex whatsoever.
You want to choose a stand up paddle board that has enough volume (buoyancy) based on your weight and experience level to properly float you. If the paddler is too heavy for a SUP board, the board will sit lower in the water and thus create more drag, making it difficult to pick up speed.
Paddle boards can hold an average of 200 to 300 pounds. But boards that hold 500 pounds or more are widely available. Paddle boards are weight-rated by individual manufacturers in pounds or by volume.
Most paddle boards can fit up to two people and still have enough space to comfortably have a picnic. If you are worried that your SUP is too small, you could take two paddle boards out!
They can not deflate, they can not fill with water and sink, and can always safely get you to shore if damaged while paddling.
When the paddler is heavier than the board's weight capacity, the board will ride lower, dragging in the water and making in inefficient to paddle.
When paddling in the rain, you need confidence to go along with your SUPing attire. Choose from a lineup of inflatable SUPs that have been constructed and designed for greater balance and stability, and one that comes with all of the accessories you need so that you can get into the water right away.
The recommended PSI for an inflatable paddle board is 10 to 15 PSI, with the highest recommended pressure being 25 PSI. The average inflatable paddle board rider will inflate their board to only 12 PSI, sometimes more.
The most common types of electric pumps used with inflatable SUP's are: pumps that connect to your car battery. pumps that connect to an external battery pack. pumps that connect to the 12V connection in your vehicle.
